A model of plant-herbivore interaction with size structure in plants using toxin-determined functional response

چکیده
One of the possible consequences of global warming in the northern hemisphere is the invasion of Arctic Tundra by woody plants, which is influenced by the chemical defense of plants against mammal browsing. In this paper, we explore the toxin-mediated plant-herbivore interaction with size structure in plants using a simplified mathematical model. The size structure of plants is important as it seems to play a significant role on the woody plant invading. We formulate a three dimensional ordinary differential equations model of the simplified dynamics of adult-trees, seedlings and herbivores in the presence of chemical defense of plants, building on a general two dimensional toxin-determined functional response model of plants and herbivores. Then we investigate the mathematical features of the model, analyze the stability of equilbiria. When choosing plant toxin measurement G and herbivore health measurement μ as bifurcation parameters, we analytically show the existence of different bifurcations, including a saddle-node bifurcation and a Hopf bifurcation. A BogdanovTakens cusp with codimension 2 is also identified. A Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation occurs when bifurcation parameters are perturbed at the cusp. ∗email: [email protected] †email: [email protected]

Bifurcation analysis of a plant–herbivore model with toxin-determined functional response
A system of ordinary differential equations is considered which models the plant–herbivore interactions mediated by a toxin-determined functional response. The new functional response is a modification of the traditional Holling Type II functional response by explicitly including a reduction in the consumption of plants by the herbivore due to chemical defenses. A detailed bifurcation analysis ...
متن کاملDynamics of a plant-herbivore model with toxin-induced functional response.
Traditional functional responses for plant-herbivore interactions do not take into account explicitly the effect of plant toxin. However, considerable evidence suggests that toxins set upper limits on food intake for many species of herbivorous vertebrates. In this paper, a mathematical model for plant-herbivore interactions mediated by toxin-determined functional response is studied. The model...
متن کاملModeling the Impact of Plant Toxicity on Plant–Herbivore Dynamics
Numerous empirical studies over the past two decades have documented substantial effects of plant toxins on diet choice and feeding behavior of herbivores, but analytical models have failed thus far to incorporate toxin-mediated effects of browsing on plant population dynamics. We study a mathematical model that incorporates plant toxicity in the functional response of plant–herbivore interacti...
متن کاملGlobal Dynamics of a Plant-Herbivore Model with Toxin-Determined Functional Response
Studies of the dynamics of plant-herbivore interactions that explicitly address model robustness are important in assessing uncertainty. Hence, identifying conditions that guarantee the global stability of plant-herbivore systems can be used to assess the rationale involved in, for example, the selection of management and/or control decisions. The model used here to illustrate these issues is n...
متن کاملGrazing optimization, nutrient cycling, and spatial heterogeneity of plant-herbivore interactions: should a palatable plant evolve?
Can the evolution of plant defense lead to an optimal primary production? In a general theoretical model, Loreau (1995) and de Mazancourt et al. (1998, 1999) have shown that herbivory could increase primary production up to a moderate rate of grazing intensity through recycling of a limiting nutrient, provided several conditions are fulfilled. In the present paper, we assume: (1) grazing intens...
